Lower a bill with an AI agent

Your internet, phone or insurance price crept up. An agent can read the bill, compare offers and ask your provider for a better price, with you approving each step.

Short answer

Yes, for bills where you can ask for a better price. In our feed, Grok Bot users cut an internet and phone bill by chatting with the provider's support, and got a home insurance renewal lowered by showing cheaper quotes. Grok Bot, ChatGPT Work and Claude Cowork can read your bills and draft the request; Grok Bot can also use support chats and calls if you set that up. Keep the final yes for yourself.

Agents that can do this

Grok BotFrom $30/mo · Not confirmed

Seen doing this twice in our feed, through a support chat and a phone call. Needs Premium ($30/mo).

ChatGPT WorkFrom $0 · Worldwide (where ChatGPT works)

Free in the desktop app, so a cheap way to compare offers and draft the request.

Claude CoworkFrom $20/mo · Where Claude is available

Good at reading PDF bills and policies side by side. Needs Pro ($20/mo).

How to do it

  1. Gather the bills

Download your last bill or policy as a PDF, plus any renewal letter that shows the new price.

  2. Say what must stay the same

Tell the agent which speed, features or cover you need, so it doesn't save money by cutting what you use.

  3. Let it compare

Ask for your provider's current price for new customers, competitor offers at your address, and add-ons you may not use.

  4. Approve the ask

Read the message or script before the agent contacts anyone, and sign in to accounts yourself.

  5. Confirm in writing

Before any change, have the agent get the new monthly or yearly total confirmed, and set a reminder for when a promo ends.

Here is my latest [INTERNET / PHONE / INSURANCE] bill: [ATTACH PDF]. I need to keep [FEATURES OR COVER I NEED]. Find out what my provider charges new customers for the same plan, what 2 or 3 competitors charge at my address [ADDRESS], and any add-ons on my bill I may not use. Give me a short list of savings with the amount for each. Then draft a polite message asking my provider to lower the price, quoting the best offer you found. Don't contact anyone or change my plan until I say yes.

Our own prompt, written from the cases on this page. We haven't run it on these agents ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.

Watch out for

  • Promo prices usually end after 12 months. Set a reminder to ask again.
  • A cheaper plan can come with a new contract or early cancellation fee. Ask for the full terms before you agree.
  • Sign in to your accounts yourself, and don't share card numbers or passwords in the chat.
  • Results in our feed are what posters report. Your provider may say no.

Questions people ask

Can AI negotiate my bills?

It can do most of the work: read the bill, find cheaper offers and write or say the request. Whether you get a lower price is up to the provider. In our feed, two posters say it worked for internet, phone and home insurance.

Which bills are easiest to lower?

Internet, cell phone, cable and insurance renewals, because providers often keep cheaper prices for new customers and will match them when asked.

Is it safe to let an agent talk to my provider?

Keep control of the key steps. Sign in yourself, ask the agent to show you each message first, and only agree to a change once the new total is confirmed in writing.

Can an AI agent cancel a subscription for me?

Yes, many can find the cancellation steps and do them, or call for you if they have a phone tool. Ask it to confirm the end date and any refund, and to check with you before it cancels anything.

Shop around before your home insurance renews, then ask your insurer to match

The poster's agent reminded him that his home and contents insurance was about to renew at a higher price. He asked Grok Bot to find alternatives, and it came back with a better quote. He then connected a voice tool so the agent could call his current insurer, and says that once they shared the lower quotes, the insurer cut his renewal price. He says it took about 10 minutes in total.

Have an agent go through your internet and phone bills and ask for a lower price

The poster sent Grok Bot his internet and wireless bills as PDFs and asked it to lower the total without losing features. It found no better competitor deal, but it found that his provider sold the same internet plan for less than he was paying after two years of price rises, plus a $20 a month phone add-on he didn't use. He signed in to the account himself, then watched Grok Bot use the provider's customer service chat, and he told it to confirm the new monthly total before agreeing to anything. He also had to ask it to slow its replies down. It set a reminder for when the promo price ends.
