Can an AI agent book a restaurant table for you?

ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta Muse can now book tables through OpenTable or Resy, and some agents will phone the restaurant. Here is what each one can do, what has gone wrong for real people, and how to make sure you can still cancel.

Short answer

Yes, for many US restaurants. ChatGPT can book Resy restaurants inside the chat, Gemini can book and cancel OpenTable tables, and Meta Muse books through OpenTable with your approval. Genspark can phone a restaurant that doesn't take online bookings. The weak spot is what comes after: in one newspaper test, Muse booked a table easily but couldn't cancel it. So ask the agent which app it booked through, and keep the confirmation so you can change or cancel it yourself.

Agents that can do this

ChatGPT WorkFrom $0 · Worldwide (where ChatGPT works)

Resy says you can find and book US Resy restaurants inside ChatGPT, picking a time from live availability and confirming your details. This works in regular ChatGPT chats.

Gemini Spark (Tasks in Gemini)From $19.99/mo · Not in the EEA, UK, Switzerland or Nigeria

Google's help page says the Gemini app can check availability, book and cancel OpenTable reservations. This is the regular Gemini app's OpenTable connection, not a Spark task. You need to be 18+, in the US or UK, on a personal Google account. To change a booking it gives you a link to OpenTable instead.

Meta MuseFrom $0 · US, Canada, Japan and Singapore

OpenTable is a launch partner for Muse: it finds a table, sets up the booking for a one-tap approval and can watch for cancellations. US, Canada, Japan and Singapore only.

GensparkFrom $0 · Not confirmed

Genspark's Call for Me phones businesses for you, which helps when a restaurant only takes bookings by phone. In our feed one call worked and one stalled when the host asked a question it couldn't answer.

How to do it

  1. Give every detail up front

Number of people, date, a time window, area, budget, food you want or want to avoid, and seating needs like a high chair or step-free access.

  2. Ask it to check the place is open

Agents can rely on old listings. Have it check the restaurant's own site or recent reviews before booking.

  3. Approve the booking yourself

Look at the name, date, time, party size and any deposit or no-show fee before you say yes.

  4. Find out where it was booked

OpenTable, Resy, another app or a phone call. That decides how you change or cancel it.

  5. Keep the confirmation

Save the confirmation email or text and put the booking in your calendar with the cancel deadline.

Copy this prompt

Find a table for [NUMBER] people on [DATE] between [TIME] and [TIME] near [AREA]. We'd like [TYPE OF FOOD], budget about [PRICE] per person, and we need [SEATING NEEDS]. First check that each restaurant is open and still taking bookings. Show me up to 3 options with the time, the booking app (OpenTable, Resy or other), and any deposit, card hold or no-show fee. Don't book until I pick one. After booking, send me the confirmation and tell me exactly how I can change or cancel it myself.

Our own prompt, written from the cases on this page. We haven't run it on these agents ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.

Watch out for

  • Many restaurants charge a no-show or late cancel fee. Know the deadline before you approve.
  • Agents can suggest places that have closed. Check the restaurant's own site.
  • If the agent booked through an app you don't use, you may not be able to cancel it yourself. Ask before it books.
  • For phone bookings, give the agent the answers it will be asked: name, phone number, party size and a backup time.

What real people report

Booking app or phone call?

If the restaurant is on OpenTable or Resy, a connected booking is the cleaner route: you pick a real open time, you get a normal confirmation, and you can manage it in that app. Gemini and Muse use OpenTable, and ChatGPT uses Resy for US restaurants.

A phone call is the fallback for places that only take bookings by phone, or for a large group. Calls are where agents get stuck, so give it everything the host might ask, and a backup time. Our guide Have an AI agent call customer service has more on what makes a call go well.

Watching for a table to open up

OpenTable says Muse can watch for cancellations and tell you when a table opens. That's useful for a fully booked place on a special night. Ask the agent to message you before it grabs a slot, so you don't end up holding two bookings and paying a no-show fee for one of them. For a whole trip, see Plan a trip with an AI agent.

Questions people ask

Can ChatGPT make restaurant reservations?

Yes, for US restaurants on Resy. Resy says ChatGPT shows live availability under each suggestion, and you pick a time and confirm your details without leaving the chat.

Can Gemini book a table on OpenTable?

Yes. Google's help page says the Gemini app can check availability, book and cancel OpenTable reservations through Reserve with Google. It's for adults in the US and UK with a personal Google account and Keep Activity turned on. It can't take payments, and to change a booking it sends you a link to OpenTable.

Can an AI agent call a restaurant to book?

Some can. Genspark's Call for Me phones businesses and sends back a summary. In our feed, one call got a table and another stalled on a simple question, so give it every detail in advance.

What if the agent books the wrong time?

Use the confirmation to change or cancel it in the booking app, or call the restaurant. Ask the agent which app it used before it books, so you know where to go.

Muse booked a table but couldn't cancel it

Sarah Koh of The Straits Times tried Meta Muse soon after it launched in Singapore. Booking a restaurant table went smoothly. Cancelling it did not: Muse tried to log in to a Chope account (a local booking app) that the reporter didn't have, and couldn't finish. In another test it suggested a restaurant that had recently closed, because the listing data it relied on was out of date. Muse did better on other jobs: it sent umbrella reminders based on the forecast, and from a trip in the calendar it flagged that a visa and a digital arrival card were needed. Meta says Muse asks before it buys anything or sends an email, and that you can limit some connections to read-only. The takeaway for anyone booking tables with an agent: making the booking is the easy part. Know how you'll change or cancel it, and check the place is still open before you go.
