Can an AI agent book a flight for you?
Some agents can now search flights, fill in the booking and pay once you say yes. Here is which ones, what has gone wrong for real people, and the checks that keep a mistake from costing you a ticket.
Yes. Meta Muse, ChatGPT Work and Grok Bot can all find a flight and take it to the booking step, and each one says it asks you before it pays. In our feed, Muse found a Thanksgiving flight across several airports and left only the purchase click. It has also booked a ticket under the wrong name, and a refund got stuck with the booking service it used. So let the agent search and fill in the details, then check the passenger names, the seller and the price yourself before you approve.
Agents that can do this
Meta says Muse can book travel and asks before any purchase. Some bookings in our feed went through Duffel, a booking service, not the airline. US, Canada, Japan and Singapore only.
OpenAI's help pages say Work's cloud browser can find flights and asks you to confirm before a booking or payment. Needs a paid plan (not Free or Go).
xAI's changelog says Bots use the payment method you pick in the Vault and that you approve every purchase. In our feed it found a free rebooking link after a cancelled flight. Needs Premium ($30/mo).
How to do it
Give the exact trip
Cities or airports, dates, time windows, cabin, bags and how many stops you'll accept.
Give names exactly as on the passport
First, middle and last name for every traveler, including children and babies, plus any frequent flyer numbers.
Ask where it will book
The airline's own site or a booking service. If it's a booking service, ask how you would change or refund the ticket.
Check the summary before you approve
Names, flight numbers, times, total price with bag fees, and the fare rules. Only then say yes.
Check the booking afterwards
Open the confirmation on the airline's site with the booking code and check every passenger is on it.
Copy this prompt
Find flights from [CITY OR AIRPORTS] to [CITY OR AIRPORTS], leaving [DATE, TIME WINDOW] and returning [DATE, TIME WINDOW], for [NUMBER] adults and [NUMBER] children, [CABIN], with [NUMBER] checked bags and at most [NUMBER] stops. My budget is [PRICE] in total. Show me the 3 best options with the total price including bags, the fare rules for changes and refunds, and whether you would book on the airline's site or through another company. Passenger names exactly as on our passports: [NAMES]. Don't pay until I reply 'book option [NUMBER]', and show me the final summary with every name first.
Our own prompt, written from the cases on this page. We haven't run it on these agents ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.
Watch out for
- A name that doesn't match the passport can make a ticket unusable. One Muse user in our feed lost $1,136.19 this way.
- If a booking service holds the ticket, refunds and changes go through that company, not the airline.
- Basic economy fares often can't be changed or refunded. Ask the agent to show the fare rules.
- After any rebooking, check every passenger on the airline's site. Children are easy to drop.
What real people report
- @EndicottInvests on X asked Meta Muse to compare Thanksgiving flights from Chicago across 5 to 7 airports near his destination, including the Uber cost from each. He says it came back with three options and a link, so he only had to click purchase. Our write-up: Find the cheapest holiday flight across several nearby airports.
- @jasongrubb_fit on X says Muse booked his Copenhagen flight under his middle and last name. The booking went through Duffel, and he says neither the airline nor Duffel would fix or refund it. Our write-up: A flight booked under the wrong name cost $1,136.
- @OyetokeT on X says Muse cancelled a Southwest flight but the refund never arrived, and Muse said the money was with Duffel. Our write-up: A flight refund got stuck with the booking service behind the agent.
- @manosaie on X had a family flight rebooked with help from several agents, and at check-in the baby's ticket was missing. Our write-up: After an agent rebooks a flight, check every passenger.
When your flight is cancelled
An agent is often more useful after a cancellation than for the first booking. @suyashverma on X says Grok Bot found a free rescheduling link on IndiGo's website that he didn't know existed, after the airline moved him to a bad flight (our write-up). Ask the agent to look up the airline's own rebooking and refund options before you pay for a new ticket.
For US flights, the Department of Transportation says you're entitled to a refund if the airline cancels your flight and you choose not to travel or accept vouchers or credits instead. See DOT: Refunds and check it yourself before you rely on it.
Searching without booking
If you only want to watch prices, you don't need to let an agent pay at all. Our guide Track flight prices and get told when they drop covers that, and Plan a trip with an AI agent covers hotels and day plans.
Questions people ask
Can ChatGPT book flights?
ChatGPT Work's cloud browser can find flights and work on booking sites, and OpenAI says it asks for your confirmation before a booking or payment. It's on paid plans in supported regions, not Free or Go.
Can Meta Muse book flights?
Yes. Meta says Muse can book travel and checks with you before a purchase. Posters in our feed found that some bookings went through Duffel, a booking service, so ask who holds the ticket before you pay.
Is it safe to let an AI agent book a flight?
It's reasonably safe if you approve the final step yourself. Check names against your passport, the seller, the fare rules and the total price. Don't type card numbers into the chat; use the agent's own payment setup or pay yourself.
What if the agent books the wrong flight?
Contact whoever holds the booking right away, which may be a booking service and not the airline. In the US, if you bought from the airline at least seven days before departure, the airline must either let you cancel for a full refund within 24 hours or let you hold the fare for 24 hours without paying. That rule doesn't cover tickets bought through a booking service or travel agent.

Find the free rebooking option after a cancelled flight
The poster's IndiGo flight was cancelled and the airline moved him to an inconvenient flight, with no clear way to pick another one. He asked Grok Bot about it, and it found a free rescheduling link on IndiGo's website that he didn't know existed. He used it to pick a flight at a time that suited him.

A flight booked under the wrong name cost $1,136
The poster says Meta Muse booked his flight to Copenhagen under his middle and last name, even though it had his full legal name. The booking went through Duffel, a booking service. He says the airline couldn't correct it because a partner airline operated part of the trip, and Duffel refused twice in writing to fix or refund it. He's out $1,136.19 on a ticket he can't use, plus $105 in phone charges calling the airline.

A flight refund got stuck with the booking service behind the agent
The poster says Meta Muse cancelled their Southwest flight, but the refund never showed up. Muse told them the money was with Duffel, the flight booking service it works with, and the poster says they could find no way to contact Duffel. When they posted, they still didn't know who was responsible for paying them back.
