Can an AI agent shop on Amazon for you?
Amazon blocked Meta Muse in September 2026 and says outside AI agents break its Conditions of Use. Here is what that means for Muse, Grok Bot, ChatGPT and Comet users, what still works, and how to shop around the block.
Amazon blocked it. Since September 2026, people who try to use Muse on Amazon.com see a popup saying continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use. Amazon says Meta never agreed this with it and that Muse doesn't identify itself when it browses. GeekWire reports that Amazon has also moved to block shopping agents from Google and OpenAI, and it sued Perplexity over its Comet browser. Amazon wants you to use its own shopping agent, Alexa for Shopping, instead. Outside agents can still compare prices at other stores, and you can check Amazon yourself.
Agents that can do this
Blocked on Amazon since September 2026. In our feed, Muse told a user it can't go on Amazon but could compare prices at Walmart, Home Depot and Lowe's instead. US, Canada, Japan and Singapore only.
Results are mixed. In one post Amazon, Walmart, Instacart and DoorDash all blocked Grok Bot from building a grocery cart. In another, a user says it got a stuck refund paid through Amazon's normal support chat. xAI added shopping cards and an approve-before-buying order flow on October 27, 2026.
Amazon sued Perplexity over Comet shopping on its site. Amazon won a preliminary injunction in March 2026, then lost it on August 4 when the Ninth Circuit said the user, not the AI company, was the one accessing Amazon. Amazon's terms still say no to outside agents.
How to do it
Let the agent research elsewhere
Ask it to compare the item at stores it can reach, like Walmart, Target, Home Depot or Best Buy, and list the price, shipping and return window for each.
Ask which stores it couldn't check
Agents don't always say when a site blocked them. Make it list the stores it couldn't open, so a missing price isn't mistaken for a higher one.
Check Amazon yourself
Open Amazon in your own browser or app and compare the same model number, seller and shipping.
Buy where you're most comfortable
Approve any purchase yourself. Look at the seller, return policy and total with tax before you pay.
Use the agent for the follow-up
Agents are still useful after you buy: tracking deliveries, watching for price drops, and reminding you of return deadlines.
Copy this prompt
I want to buy [ITEM, WITH MODEL NUMBER IF YOU HAVE IT]. Check the price at [STORES] and list each with the price, shipping, delivery date and return window. Tell me clearly which stores you couldn't open or check. Don't sign in to any of my accounts and don't buy anything. I'll check Amazon myself and decide.
Our own prompt, written from the cases on this page. We haven't run it on these agents ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.
Watch out for
- Amazon says using an unauthorized AI agent on its site breaks its Conditions of Use. We don't know what, if anything, it does to accounts, so the choice and the risk are yours.
- Match model numbers. Similar listings can be different sizes, versions or sellers.
- Don't give an agent your Amazon password. Amazon said it was worried Muse captured and stored customer credentials. Meta says Muse can't see passwords.
What Amazon says
Amazon's statement to GeekWire: third-party apps that buy on behalf of customers "should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate." Amazon says Meta didn't tell it Muse would shop on Amazon.com, that Muse doesn't identify itself when it browses, and that it asked Meta to remove Amazon from Muse.
Amazon is pushing its own options instead. It launched Alexa for Shopping in May 2026, and its Buy for Me feature finds items on other brands' sites. Amazon says Buy for Me identifies itself and lets brands opt out. On Amazon's October 2026 earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy said he expects Alexa for Shopping to be "the primary shopping agent customers use to shop Amazon."
Which other stores block AI agents?
Amazon is not alone. CNBC reported on November 1, 2026 that JPMorgan Chase, Charles Schwab, Amazon, Neiman Marcus and Kohl's have moved to block personal agents like Muse. An audit of 51 large US retailers' published rules, quoted by CNBC, found five that explicitly restrict agents, while many others block them by accident through old anti-bot rules. In October, The RealReal tightened its bot defenses after a Verge report, so agents now struggle to log in and check out there: Some stores now block shopping agents.
Walmart went the other way. CNBC reports that Walmart said in late October it is opening its site to the AI agents customers choose, with the same prices a person would see.
What real people report
- A Muse user asked for a price comparison with Amazon. Muse said it can't use Amazon, but checked other stores: Muse can't compare prices on Amazon.
- Walmart, Instacart, DoorDash and Amazon all blocked Grok Bot when a parent asked it to build a dinner cart: Grocery sites blocked Grok Bot from building a cart.
- A user says Grok Bot got a live agent on Amazon's support chat and had a $433 refund sent to his card within minutes: A stuck $433 Amazon refund sent back to the card.
- Muse spotted a $70 restocking fee on an Amazon return and gave the user a phone script. He made the call himself and got the money back: Get a surprise restocking fee refunded.
