Plan the week's meals and fill the grocery cart

Deciding what's for dinner and writing the grocery list every week takes real time. An agent can plan meals around what your family eats and what's already in the fridge, then build the cart. Here is which agents can actually reach a grocery store, and where you still check and pay.

Short answer

Yes, with one catch: many grocery sites block agents that browse like a person, so use an agent with an official store connection. Instacart's help center lists ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Meta Muse as apps that can build an Instacart cart. In real posts, a ChatGPT Dot planned a family's meals and built a Walmart order that arrived after he approved checkout, while Grok Bot was blocked by Walmart, Instacart, DoorDash and Amazon when a parent asked it to build a dinner cart. Plan the meals with any agent, then let one with a store connection build the cart, and confirm the total and payment yourself.

Agents that can do this

ChatGPT WorkFrom $0 · Worldwide (where ChatGPT works)

ChatGPT has official Instacart and Walmart apps. One poster had his Dot plan the week and build a Walmart order. Dots needs Pro or Business Premium.

Meta MuseFrom $0 · US and Canada only

Connects to Instacart on its own when you ask for groceries, then you pay in the Instacart app. US only for Instacart.

Gemini Spark (Tasks in Gemini)From $19.99/mo · Not in the EEA, UK, Switzerland or Nigeria

Gemini can build an Instacart list for delivery that you pay for in the Instacart app. US only.

Claude CoworkFrom $20/mo · Where Claude is available

Claude can build an Instacart cart and sends you to Instacart to pay.

How to do it

  1. Tell it what your family eats

List the meals that always work, foods nobody eats, allergies, how many nights you cook and how much time you have on busy nights.

  2. Say what's already at home

A quick photo of the fridge and pantry, or a typed list, keeps it from buying what you already have.

  3. Get the plan and the list

Ask for dinners by night and one grocery list with amounts, grouped by aisle. Swap anything you don't like now, before the cart.

  4. Build the cart through a connection

Use the store's official app inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Muse. If your agent gets blocked on a store's website, ask for the list and add it to your grocery app yourself.

  5. Check and pay yourself

Look over the items, substitutions, delivery fee and tip, then pay. Instacart says orders from Gemini and Muse finish in the Instacart app.

  6. Save what worked

Ask the agent to keep the meals you liked in one cookbook document, so next week's plan starts from there.

Copy this prompt

Plan [NUMBER] dinners for [NUMBER] people this week. We like [FOODS]. We don't eat [FOODS], and [ALLERGIES]. On [BUSY NIGHTS] it has to take under 30 minutes. We already have [ITEMS AT HOME].

Give me the plan by night, then one grocery list with amounts, minus what we already have, grouped by aisle. Wait for me to change anything.

When I say go, build the cart at [STORE] and show me every item and the total. Don't check out or pay. I'll do that myself.

Our own prompt, written from the cases on this page. We haven't run it on these agents ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.

Watch out for

  • Many grocery sites block agents that browse them directly. In one post, Walmart, Instacart, DoorDash and Amazon all blocked Grok Bot.
  • Instacart says Muse orders don't get loyalty and promo pricing, coupons, pickup or replacement preferences.
  • Always check substitutions and the delivery fee before you pay.
  • Tell the agent about allergies in every plan, and still read labels yourself.
  • Results on this page are what the posters report.

What real people report

Which agents can reach a grocery store

Instacart's help page Shop with third-party AI apps lists four:

  • ChatGPT. Connect Instacart under Settings, then Apps. ChatGPT builds the cart and you can check out inside ChatGPT.
  • Claude. Claude builds the cart, then sends you to Instacart to pay.
  • Gemini. Builds a delivery list, then you pay in the Instacart app. US only.
  • Meta Muse. Connects to Instacart when you ask for groceries, and you pay in the Instacart app. US only. Instacart says Muse orders don't get loyalty and promo pricing, coupons, pickup or replacement preferences.

Walmart also has its own app inside ChatGPT that links your Walmart account and checks out through Walmart's own payment, as Retail Dive reported in March 2026.

Grok Bot, OpenClaw and Hermes don't appear on Instacart's list. They can still plan meals and write the list.

Questions people ask

Can ChatGPT order groceries for me?

It can build the cart. Through the Instacart app in ChatGPT you choose a store, review the cart and pay. Walmart also has an app in ChatGPT. One poster had his ChatGPT Dot build a Walmart order that he approved.

Why did my agent get blocked on a grocery website?

Many stores stop agents that browse their site like a person. Use the store's official app inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Muse, or have the agent write the list and order it yourself.

Will it use what I already have at home?

Only if you tell it. List what's in the fridge and pantry, or send a photo, and ask it to leave those off the grocery list.

Is it safe to let an agent pay for groceries?

Keep the payment step for yourself. All four apps on Instacart's list let you review the cart and pay at the end, so you can check items, fees and the tip first.

Plan the family's meals and get the groceries delivered

The poster built a family meal planner with a cookbook and grocery list, connected it to his ChatGPT Dot, and planned meals around what his family will actually eat and what was already at home. The Dot then put together a Walmart order from the plan. He approved checkout and the groceries arrived. He says there were gaps, like planned meals not saving to the cookbook at first, and it still took some directing and checking.

Turn your saved recipe videos into a cookbook

The poster asked Meta Muse to collect the recipe videos he had liked on Instagram and turn them into a cookbook. He then gave it to Gemini Spark and saved it in his Google Drive. Now he can ask his phone for a recipe for any dish, in Kannada, or just ask what to make, and it answers from his own collection. It's a good fix for the pile of saved food videos most people never look at again.

PromptGo through the recipe videos I've liked or saved on Instagram. For each one, write down the dish name, the...

Send chores and grocery lists to the family calendar

The poster uses a Skylight Calendar screen at home and wanted his local AI agents to add family events, chores, grocery lists and dinner plans to it. So he wrote a free, open source connector and shared it. It works with OpenClaw, Hermes and other agents, and it strips passwords and keys out of anything before it shows up on the kitchen screen. Skylight doesn't offer this connection itself, so it's a hobby project, not an official one.

Grocery sites blocked Grok Bot from building a cart

A parent out for the day found a dinner to make with their daughter and asked Grok Bot to build the grocery cart and show the total first. They say Walmart, Instacart, DoorDash and Amazon all blocked it. Many stores stop agents that browse their site like a person. The more reliable route is an official connection: Instacart's help center lists ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Muse as apps that can build a cart you then pay for yourself.
