Gather tax documents and fill in a draft
Tax season means hunting through email and bank accounts. An agent can collect the documents and draft the forms for you to review.
We haven't tested agents on this yet. In our feed, one person had Grok Bot gather documents and fill in an overseas tax filing, then reviewed and submitted it himself. Another had Claude Cowork draft a rental property Schedule E and show its plan first. Agents that work well with files, like Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work, are natural picks. Always review the result, and ask a professional if your situation is complicated.

How to do it
Make a folder
Put last year's return and this year's statements in one place, or let the agent collect them.
Ask for a plan first
Have it list every document and number it needs before it fills anything in.
Review every number
Check each figure against its source file.
Submit it yourself
Never let an agent file a tax return on its own.
Copy-paste setup
I need to file [FORM OR FILING] for tax year [YEAR]. First list every document and number this filing needs and where each usually comes from. Then search my email for those documents and put them in one folder. Fill in a draft, mark every field you're unsure about, and don't submit anything. I'll review it myself and may ask a tax professional to check it.
Our own prompt. We have not tested it on every agent yet. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.
Watch out for
- An AI agent is not a tax advisor. Mistakes are your responsibility.
- Think about which accounts you connect. Read-only access is safer.
Our test results
Not tested yet. We haven't run our own tests on this yet. When we do, results will appear here with the date, agent version, time, cost, how often we had to step in, and screenshots. How we test.
Test plan: A made-up household with sample documents: every number checked against a correct return, plus how many fields were flagged as unsure.

Gather the documents for a complicated tax filing and fill in a draft
The poster had a tax filing with overseas reporting, the kind that usually means paying a specialist. He says Grok Bot found the documents it needed in his email and bank accounts, worked out the requirements and filled in the forms. He reviewed everything and submitted it himself, and estimates it saved him over $1,000.
Draft rental property tax forms from your own files
The poster asked Claude Cowork to prepare a draft Schedule E, the US tax form for rental income, from his income and expense files. His key instruction was to show the plan first and ask for approval before touching the final forms.
