Lesson

Make can't reply to WhatsApp users with usernames

A Make user runs a WhatsApp Business chatbot. Customers who set a WhatsApp username arrive with a new kind of ID instead of a phone number. Make's Send a Message module rejected the username, and sending to the new ID returned a message ID but nothing was delivered. Replies in the thread suggest calling WhatsApp's Cloud API directly with Make's HTTP module.

The lesson: If your WhatsApp bot replies go missing, check whether those customers use usernames.

Copy this prompt

In my Make scenario, a WhatsApp reply fails when the customer has a WhatsApp username. Look at the incoming message data and tell me which ID field I get. Then explain how to send the reply with Make's HTTP module to WhatsApp's Cloud API instead, step by step, and how to test it with one message.

Our own prompt, written from what the source describes. We haven't run it ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.

Watch out for

  • A 'sent' status with a message ID doesn't mean it was delivered. Check delivery on a real phone.
