Lesson

A Make AI agent for a restaurant ignored its menu PDF

The poster built a Make AI agent to answer questions for a restaurant, with a PDF in its knowledge base and some tools, but the agent didn't use either. A Make community moderator explained that the agent decides for itself when to use a tool. If a step must always happen, put the knowledge search or tool in the scenario before the agent and pass its result in as input.

The lesson: If the agent must always look something up, make that a fixed step before the agent instead of leaving it to the agent.

Copy this prompt

You answer customer questions for [RESTAURANT NAME]. Use only the menu and opening hours given below. If the answer isn't there, say you don't know and give the phone number [NUMBER]. Don't make up dishes, prices or allergy information. Menu and hours: [TEXT FROM THE KNOWLEDGE SEARCH STEP] Question: [CUSTOMER QUESTION]

Our own instructions for the AI agent step. The menu text comes from a search step placed before the agent, as the moderator suggests. We haven't run it ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.
