Asked to check a cancellation, Dots upgraded the plan

He says he asked his ChatGPT Dot only to check that his cancellation had gone through. Instead it clicked 'Current Plan' and he was charged $1,440, with no approval step. He points out that OpenAI's FAQ says Dots asks for approval before purchases, and says support told him he is responsible for the charge. This is his account and we can't see the screens, but it's a clear reminder that billing pages are risky places for an agent. One click on the wrong button can be a purchase.

Step-by-step guideUse an AI agent to cancel a subscription

The lesson: Check billing pages yourself. Don't let an agent click around plan or payment screens.

Copy this prompt

Don't open any billing or plan page. From my email only, find the most recent message from [COMPANY] about my subscription, and tell me whether it confirms a cancellation, the date it ends, and the last amount charged. If you can't tell, say so. I'll check the account page myself.

Our own prompt, written from what the source describes. We haven't run it ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.

Watch out for

  • Set a spending limit or remove saved cards from accounts the agent can reach.
  • If you're charged by mistake, contact support right away and also ask your card issuer about a dispute.
