Lesson

ChatGPT kept putting simple questions into Work mode

The poster says ChatGPT kept defaulting to Work mode, even for simple questions and searches, which used up his Codex quota. Work and Codex draw from the same allowance, so quick questions asked in Work eat into the limit you may want for longer jobs.

The lesson: Check which mode you're in before a quick question, and save Work for real multi-step jobs.

Copy this prompt

Before you start a Work task, tell me in one line what you plan to do and roughly how many steps it takes. If my request is a quick question or search, just answer it in normal chat.

Our own prompt, built around the lesson. We haven't run it ourselves. Text in [BRACKETS] is what you replace.
